          Steps to get your soil tested<\/b><\/p>

          Soil sampling<\/i><\/b><\/p>

          Soil sampling is basically the activity of obtaining & submitting for testing a small amount of soil<\/p>

          representing the entire field. This entails obtaining soils from different points in the field, mixing them<\/p>

          together and obtaining a small representative sample.<\/p>

          1. Tools needed:<\/b><\/p>

          • Soil Auger<\/li>
          • Bucket<\/li>
          • Sample bags<\/li>
          • Marker pen(s)<\/li><\/ul>

            2. Selection of sampling areas<\/b><\/p>

            Areas differing in any of the following to be sampled separately:<\/p>

            • Soil type<\/li>
            • Soil colour<\/li>
            • Previous cropping history<\/li>
            • Previous lime\/fertilizer applications<\/li>
            • Slope<\/li>
            • Drainage<\/li><\/ul>

              3. Sampling depth<\/b><\/p>

              Depth of sampling depends on:<\/p>

              • Type of crop<\/li>
              • Cultural practices<\/li>
              • Tillage depth<\/li>
              • Nutrients to be analyzed<\/li><\/ul>

                Sampling depth for shallow rooted plants: 0-30cm<\/p>

                Sampling depth for trees: 0-50cm<\/p>

                4. Sampling procedure<\/b><\/p>

                • One sample to consist of about 20 collections points in the target area<\/li>
                • Collection points to be in a zigzag pattern<\/li>
                • Put soil from all points in a bucket & mix well<\/li>
                • Label sample bag with farmer name, farm name, field ID, sample depth, target crop, date & contact.<\/li>
                • Put 1kg of mixed soil in the labelled bag, seal well & deliver for testing<\/li>
                • Avoid sampling from areas that had fertilizer spills, lime heaps, ant hills, gate areas, livestock congregation zones, poorly drained areas, dead furrows, fertilizer bands, old fence rows or other unusual areas.<\/li><\/ul>
